19-004-SO Alert Note Conflict & Insecurity Crisis Burkina Faso
The DERF has received an alert note regarding the Conflict & Insecurity Crisis in Burkina Faso.

- The security situation of Burkina Faso has significantly deteriorated in the last months of 2018 with the escalation of armed groups attacks and inter-community conflicts, affecting the 6 regions. Following the killing of the village chief of Yirgou and 4 other inhabitants in the municipality of Barsalogho, Centre-North region in January 2019, a further increase in inter-communal violence was noted. The number of civil deaths associated to the Yirgou crisis is 49 according to government sources. Overall 290 civilians were killed since January 2018.
- People affected: There are now 622,000 people directly affected by growing insecurity, and more than 492,000 people need urgent assistance to survive. A total of 1.2 million people will need humanitarian assistance in 2019, or 5.7% of the population of Burkina Faso. The humanitarian community is appealing for $100 million to assist 900,000 most vulnerable people among the 1.2 million in need of assistance
- IDP’s: As of 12th February 2019, UN OCHA estimates the number of individuals displaced by this latest crisis to about 48,000, bringing the total numbers of IDPs to more than 101,415. In total there is more than 93,000 people in Centre-North which are considered as in need of assistance. Camps are receiving continuously new IDPs and new experience new attacks.
- Out of school: The Education Ministry reports at least 1025 closed schools impacting about 150,000 children (46% are girls) and about 4,000 teachers on the 6th February 2019
