19-013-SP_Internal displacement in Bam province Burkina Faso _Call for RR Applications

A series of violent attacks in early July in Bam province, Centre-Nord region, caused a new wave of displacement. Since mid-July, Bam province, Centre Nord region, has recorded a spike in IDPs seeking safety in the urban areas of Bourzanga Centre and Namssiguima. According to local government authorities, on 14 July at least 4,000 people from surrounding villages sought refuge in Bourzanga Centre and around 2,100 in Namssiguima. The severe magnitude of the displacement in Bourzanga Commune becomes evident by the fact that 22 out of 42 villages are currently completely empty, abandoned by their inhabitants due to safety concerns. This new wave of displacement marks an increase of more than 200% (from 2950 to 9050 IDPs) between June and July 2019, building on the trend of gradual increasing IDP numbers in Bam province.
