19-019-SP Alert Note on drought in Tanzania (Fund Not Activated)
Losimingori is located in the Monduli area northeast of the Arusha region of Tanzania. Housing for Masai living in a very dry and desolate area, where the soil conditions are characterized by many lava rocks and frequent erosion. The entire area is underdeveloped and home to wildlife.
The spikes famine due to lack of water throughout the affected area. The specific implications make the population acutely vulnerable to hunger and emaciation, where children in particular are affected. Other local and social implications include further marginalization and future vulnerability.
Due to increasing climate change and lack of rainfall, it has once again resulted in a failed harvest of maize and beans, which is their primary food supply. This further creates a lack of milk from the animals which makes it impossible to self-support until the next long rainy season and possible harvest in May 2020. This affects more than 5000 people in Losimingori, many of whom are children, women and frail people. The population is already malnourished and forced to drink dirty water, as the water they have access to, is the same as the animals use.
