23-013-RO Alert Note Landslide in Georgia

Fair Trade Danmark has submitted an alert note due to the landslide in Georgia.

The landslide occurred on August 3rd at 15h (local time in Georgia) in the Shovi area in the Racha-Lechkhumi and Kvemo Svaneti
region of the country.

The affected area is a mountainous region with steep slopes. The landslide is a natural disaster that occurred without warning. It was caused by heavy rains and flooding, which saturated the soil and made it unstable. The landslide also triggered a mudflow, which further damaged the affected area.

The most vulnerable groups affected by the landslide include women, children, and the elderly. Access to the affected population is difficult due to the remote location of the villages and the damage caused by the landslide. At the moment only helicopter transport is viable. The most urgent needs of the affected population include food, water, shelter, medical care, and psychosocial support. The government of Georgia is leading the response to the landslide, with assistance from the UN and other international organizations.
