Alert Note: Armed Violence in Sanaag and Togdheer regions in Somaliland
Iftin Organisation has submitted an alert due to armed violence in Sanaag and Togdheer regions in Somaliland.
The crises in Ceerigaabo and Buuhoodle are primarily driven by political and clan conflicts involving the Dhulbahante and Warsangeli clans. The Dhulbahante clan, feeling marginalized within Somaliland’s power-sharing structure, has rallied behind the SSC militia, seeking either an alternative governance framework or integration into Puntland. Tensions escalated into violent confrontations with Somaliland authorities, particularly affecting areas like Buuhoodle and Ceerigaabo. These clashes have led to significant casualties, widespread displacement, and extensive damage to homes and infrastructure, further complicating the social and economic landscape. The resulting instability has exacerbated crime rates, particularly in abandoned properties, and forced many vulnerable residents to migrate in search of safety. Despite various attempts to mediate and de-escalate the situation, the ongoing conflict continues to pose substantial challenges to both local and regional stability, highlighting the intricate interplay of clan dynamics and governance in the area.
