Alert Note: Emergency Relief for Flood Affected People in Bangladesh
Danish Muslim Aid (DMA) has submitted an alert note due to floods in Bangladesh.
Severe flooding in southeastern Bangladesh’s Feni, Noakhali, Cumilla, and Fatikchhari districts, triggered by unprecedented rainfall and river overflows, has displaced over 3 million people since mid-August 2024. The floods have submerged homes, farmlands, and infrastructure, causing extensive damage. Vulnerable groups, including women, children, the elderly, and individuals with disabilities, are particularly affected, experiencing food shortages, overcrowded shelters, and increased risks of waterborne diseases and violence. Urgent emergency and protection needs include providing safe temporary shelters and reconstructing damaged homes, distributing emergency food supplies along with nutritional support, and ensuring access to clean water, sanitation facilities, and hygiene kits. Additionally, there is a critical need for medical care, vaccinations, and mental health support. Protection measures must address child safety, prevent gender-based violence, and enhance community safety. The response from government and relief agencies is under strain, with delays and issues in resource allocation leading to political tensions. Immediate assistance is crucial, with DERF grants playing a vital role in delivering rapid aid to the most affected and isolated communities.
