Alert note: Humanitarian crisis in Lebanon
Danish Muslim Aid has submitted an alert note due to humanitarian crisis in Lebanon.
On 23 September 2024, Israel launched a devastating airstrike campaign on Lebanon, resulting in displacements, deaths, injuries, and destruction. The following has been noted to-date:
- 833,391 Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) according to IOM Mobility Snapshot – with data collected up to 24 October 2024. Of those, 48% are living in host settings, 23% in 984 collective shelters, and 26% are renting houses. About 114,710 have sought refuge in the North.
- According to the Ministry of Public Health, and as listed on OCHA’s Flash Update #35, 2,309 persons have been killed and 10,782 persons injured (14 October 2024).
- 3,829 IDPs have been registered with UNRWA at its 11 emergency shelters (15 October 2024).
- 85,000 Palestinian refugees have been displaced from 6 out of the 12 officially recognized camps with many seeking shelter in UNRWA schools in Saida (41%) and the North (37%) as published by Thabet Organization for the Right of Return.
The crisis consists of an armed conflict that is escalating every day. Infrastructure, homes, and essential services, particularly in heavily targeted areas, have witnessed massive destruction. The health sector is currently under threat. People are spending the night in their cars around Beirut or moving to other areas, such as north Lebanon. The presence of a large number of IDPs has further strained the country’s already fragile resources and schools have been transformed into collective shelters for thousands. IDPs come from already vulnerable and deprived populations. Having lost their homes, their livelihoods, and their sources of living, they are in need of essential and basic services, such as food, water, hygiene kits, and winterization items.
