Call: Violent Conflict and Food Insecurity in Mali (18-012-SO)
A forgotten humanitarian crisis is ongoing in the Sahel area involving Mali, Burkina Faso, Mauritania and Niger. In Mali, the humanitarian situation keeps deteriorating particularly in the conflicted-affected areas in North and Central Mali. Inter-community clashes result in a growing number of civilian casualties and protection needs.
The situation is exacerbated by extended periods of food shortages. Harvests in the past two years were low due to droughts. In the current growing season, unseasonal rainfalls have, on the other hand, caused floods and destruction of crops in many localities.
Households displaced by conflict have typically left everything behind, including granaries, animals and other materials. During displacement, households were unable to cultivate their fields in the ongoing growing season. At the same time, market prices of food has increased.
