Humanitarian access to certain areas like the North and North-Center is difficult and required working through local and community-based organizations. c.2 What is the nature of the crisis? The crisis is related to both population movements caused by security incidents and food insecurity. The area is generally dry and food insecure and is already in the midst of a food insecure period. According to the March 13 appeal, there are 676,000 food insecure people and 130,000 children at risk of severe acute malnutrition in the area and living conditions in these areas are characterized by food insecurity and lack of security and protection. More than a thousand school have been closed depriving around 150,000 children of education. Some 120,000 people have no access to medical care with many health centers shuttered or providing only minimal services. Some of the displaced persons have been hosted through traditional solidarity by host families. Others create new settlements and live in dilapidated shelters and struggle to survive.
